During an overdose, an opioid can cause breathing to stop. If used quickly, Naloxone can reverse the effects of the opioid so that breathing can begin again in minutes. This overdose antidote can be injected or given as a nasal spray.

While it can cause withdrawal symptoms, this overdose treatment is safe. Before its effect wears off (20-90 minutes after application) Naloxone gives emergency medical professionals time to act.

Through CURES grants, Naloxone is now provided to first responders and providers throughout Alabama.
